# Claude Pet

> Claude Pet is a free desktop companion and Claude usage monitor for macOS and Windows. It shows usage percentages and reset times in one compact pill, with distinct server-reported and estimated values. Public source is available on GitHub.

## Platforms and installation

- macOS 12 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel. Apple Silicon: ClaudePet.dmg. Intel: ClaudePet-universal.dmg. Open the DMG and move ClaudePet.app to Applications. Mac release artifacts are Developer ID signed and Apple-notarized. ZIP alternatives are available.
- Windows 10/11, x64. Installer: claude-pet-win-setup.exe, with per-user installation, a Start Menu entry and optional start at sign-in. Portable: extract claude-pet-win.zip and run ClaudePet/ClaudePet.exe.
- Windows builds are unsigned. SmartScreen or other security warnings may appear, depending on system settings and policies. Do not promise a one-time warning or guaranteed absence of warnings.
- Python is bundled with the packaged applications. Sign in to Claude Code on the same computer first.

## How usage works

- Exact mode requests server-computed account usage percentages and reset times from Anthropic using the existing Claude Code credential. macOS uses its Keychain or the Claude Code credentials file; Windows uses %USERPROFILE%/.claude/.credentials.json. Available usage categories depend on the account and response.
- Local fallback estimates activity recorded in Claude Code logs under ~/.claude (under the Windows user profile on Windows). It does not include web or desktop activity absent from those logs. Optional calibration applies to this estimate, not server percentages.
- The compact summary pill distinguishes data source: green numbers for server usage, amber numbers and ≈ for estimates. Label colors reflect utilization thresholds, not data source. There is no promise of exact remaining token counts.
- Optional Admin API mode reports Anthropic Console organization costs, separately from subscription limits. Its configured Admin API key is stored in plaintext in ~/.claude_pet.json (under the Windows user profile on Windows).

## Companion and updates

- Built-in cat plus bundled dog, fox, scorpion and elephant. Select a pet from the right-click menu.
- Optional screen roaming, cursor following at a distance and movement between monitors. The usage pill tucks away while moving; the pet can be dragged and resized.
- Custom compatible pet.json and sprite-sheet folders go under ~/.claude_pet/pets on Mac or %USERPROFILE%/.claude_pet/pets on Windows.
- macOS: update checks every hour after launch, starting after the first hour. The right-click menu can check and install newer releases.
- Windows: use the right-click menu to check for updates, then download the newer installer from GitHub Releases. Do not describe this as automatic replacement or hourly checking on Windows.
- Current release tracks Claude. Other AI services are not listed as supported.

## Privacy and independence

Local usage parsing happens on the computer. Exact mode sends the existing Claude Code credential to Anthropic to request account usage. Update checks and downloads contact GitHub. Those usage and update paths do not upload prompts, transcripts or source code. This is not an offline-only app.
